RIS asked retail technology companies around the globe to share with us the most innovative technology set to hit the show floor at this year's NRF Big Show. Of the 50 candidates we received, RIS selected nine technology innovations that we believe will have a significant impact on improving retail systems and ultimately customer experiences in 2010.

ATLANTA, November 10, 2009 – QuantiSense today announced that Hudson’s Bay Company has selected its retail analytics and business intelligence application to help standardize the company’s enterprise-wide approach to inventory accounting. Hudson’s Bay Company is Canada’s largest diversified general merchandise retailer with more than 600 retail locations across the country under the banners Zellers, the Bay, Home Outfitters, and Fields. The company’s North American parent company, Hudson’s Bay Trading Company (HBTC), also owns and operates Lord & Taylor, the well-known department store located in fine malls across the United States.

Analyzing Store Performance with BI

Nearly 30 years ago, a small surf shop opened its doors in Newport Beach, California. As teens around the country tuned into fashions inspired by the Southern California lifestyle, PacSun's business exploded and today has transformed into more than 900 stores. The chain offers top names in teen fashion, selling private-label and national brands including Hurley, Billabong, Fox, Volvom, Vurt, Roxy and Quiksilver.

To achieve long-term growth, in 2006, PacSun searched for an enterprise business intelligence (BI) solution that had the ability to consolidate its corporate data into a cohesive structure. The goal was for executives to be able to access strategic information each day and then perform timely analysis of business trends and key metrics without significantly increasing IT staff or replacing legacy systems.

The companies said that with the integration between their solutions, retailers will be able to quickly and easily take advantage of "QuantiSense Playbooks" which it characterizes as "a set of plays unique for each retail job role that guides users to make better decisions and take action in response to specific situations."

E-commerce is one of the few bright spots in retail today. Its predicted growth is even more encouraging: Forrester recently projected that the Web will continue to gain share of total retail sales in the next several years.

Despite the continuing innovations in e-commerce and retail technology, many retailers lag behind in effectively managing their multichannel businesses. Siloed information is a common enough problem in a single-channel business.
